Long sleeved cossies and swim tunics aren't just perfect for religious dress, they're also ideal for watersports and staycations (the Cornish coast is chilly even in August, people). The industry has come a long way since it initially dipped its toe into modest swimwear a couple of years ago. The first long-sleeved swimsuit brand Cover Swim was founded in 2008 with the aim to provide temperature control while eliminating the threat of skin damage from the sun. Nike launched its first collection of modest swimwear Victory Swim back in 2019 – which included a waterproof hijab, swim leggings and tunic top – and has since been joined by high street stores such as Boden and M&S.

With its full length sleeves and easy zip front, Boden’s Capri swimsuit is ideal for all kinds of watersports. Plus, you can rest assured you will still feel supported thanks to the in-built padded cups. We love the flattering colour blocking (hello, hot-pink waistband), but it also comes in a neutral navy and cream combo if that’s more your style.

M&S’ half-zip rash vest is made from chlorine-resistant fabric so it’ll still feel like new after a summer’s wear. We love how this zebra-print top looks with the matching briefs (together they’re only £40 in the summer sale), but you can always swap in a pair of swim leggings for added coverage.

If you’re looking for more of a wetsuit rather than a swimming costume, Sweaty Betty has you covered. This short style is made from Yulex (an eco alternative to neoprene) but will still keep you completely dry thanks to the high neck, long sleeves and sealed zip. This baby has a handy waterproof pocket for your keys and an extra long pull-cord to make changing easier.

Nike’s Victory Swim label is packed with modest swimwear that provides full coverage while still being lightweight and agile in the water. This swim tunic offers UPF 40+ protection against UV rays as well as an in-built shelf bra with removable cups. Our favourite is this hot-pink shade but it also comes in a versatile black – and they’re both available with matching swim leggings and hijabs.

How fun are the subtle lilac zebra stripes on this Roxy long sleeve swimsuit? This one-piece is from the brand’s latest collab with ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion Kelia Moniz, so is designed for surfing – but it wouldn’t look out of place at a pool party on your next summer vacay.

If bright colours and patterns aren’t your thing, check out Lululemon’s plain black paddle suit. We like its high neck, flat seams (for a streamlined fit), and the hidden drop-in pocket for your valuables.

Sweaty Betty’s Tidal swimsuit is a WH editor favourite. We’ll be wearing ours wild swimming this summer – the long sleeves protect you from the sun’s rays and it’s chlorine and sunscreen resistant, too.

Fat Face’s floral rash swimsuit is perfect for staycations in Cornwall. Although it’s not a wetsuit, the seamless neckline and functional pull cord makes this baby ideal for surfing and other water activities. Wear yours with the matching quick-drying board shorts for some added coverage.

Speedo has levelled up on the modest swimwear front with this 3-in-1 set. It comprises a swim hijab, tunic top and leggings, all connected by a secure internal fastening. With its 2mm density and technical zig-zag stitching to help keep water out, Finisterre’s swimsuit is designed to provide an extra layer of warmth for when you’re swimming in the elements. The brand pledged to make all its wetsuits from eco-friendly Yulex from 2021 as a commitment to protecting sea life. Sustainable and stylish: two big ticks from us.

Ideal for wild swimming, Australian brand Seafolly’s modest swimsuit is fully lined to keep you warm across all seasons. We like the stylish stand collar and statement gold zip with ring details, too.

Boden’s high neck rash vest is cut in a close fit, so you don’t have to worry about it riding up when catching your next surf. Wear it with the brand’s matching shorts or swim leggings for extra coverage.
