British stone. John, Indiana (Associated Press) - A police officer in northwestern Indiana jumped into a cistern and rescued two young children from a partially submerged vehicle that fell into muddy water during the hunt.

St. John’s police spokesman Roger Patz said that St. John’s police officer Darrell Shaffer spotted the car at about 11:25 on Sunday evening after Lake County police reported that the car had escaped during a traffic stop.

Patz said that the driver allegedly fled from Shafer on a local road to Illinois and then returned to Indiana along Interstate 94.

Patz said that the female driver lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle flew into the air and “falled into the reservoir”.

Patz said Schaefer jumped into the water and could see the driver still sitting in the car. Schaefer then noticed a child seat and fumbled under the water until he found a child.

"Then he touched the second child's leg and pulled that child to the surface of the water to safety," Patz said.

He said that both children are under 5 years old.

According to the Northwest Indiana Times, the driver was not confirmed by the police and he was ordered to get out of the car and was detained.
