SEVEN HILLS, Ohio -- An early 20th birthday present is how Seven Hills Community Recreation Center Director of Recreation Jen Burger is viewing the busy facility’s new equipment and cardio machine purchases.

“The rec center opened in February of 2003 so most of the equipment is hitting that 20-year mark,” Burger said. “We’ve had some really good vendors who have helped to keep them running and everything in good condition.

“We’ve replaced padding and cables on a maintenance schedule but just like things in your house, everything kind of gets worn and dated. Not only did we invest in the parks with our recreation levy but we also invested in the rec center.”

The new purchases from Health and Fitness Equipment Center are being paid for using funds from the resident-approved 2020 parks and recreation levy.

That includes for the first time the city signing a five-year contract with an annual lease cost of $19,384 for new cardio machines.

“This is something that is going to keep our cardio equipment, treadmills, ellipticals, bikes in top condition all of the time,” Burger said. “Those get the most use here and are the most battered equipment.

“I did reach out to neighboring communities and several of my other directors about leasing, which seems to be a good trend now. It just means your machines are going to be replaced in an orderly fashion.”

While the cardio purchase features treadmills, StairClimbers, bikes and rowers, the strength equipment purchase is equally extensive. The list includes more than 30 items, including a dumbbell rack and various weights.

At a cost of $70,632 to purchase, the latter finds the community recreation center moving on from Nautilus machines to Precor.

The arrival of the new machines and equipment is expected later this year. Burger said she’s timing the switchover with a carpet replacement in the fitness center and the addition of rubberized tile to the second-floor fitness center.

“People are excited,” Burger said. “They asked what kind of equipment are we getting. Our personal trainers who work here at the recreation center have given us a lot of good feedback and help with that.

“Also, during our closure to replace the equipment, our members aren’t going to lose out on any time. They’ll be able to still work out by utilizing the Broadview Heights recreation center.”

Seven Hill Mayor Anthony D. Biasiotta is also excited about the new amenities.

“As a membership-based facility, we must maintain a viable and competitive product to keep pace will our competitors,” Biasiotta said.
